Media, media, media

Today I have nothing eloquent to say. I've been working on my website, researching other ways to display media than simply uploading an .mp3 or .mov file (where it goes to another page), and otherwise enjoying lots of media that now works with our not-so-broadband internet connection (768kps). The Daily Show with Jon Stewart finally has its own website with a huge library of videos that I could spend hours and hours watching if I'm not careful. The first video listed here is one of my absolute favorites.

I also uploaded some old videos from 2006 when I played in the Marriage of Figaro and in Britten's War Requiem. The volume on the first video is pretty loud, so turn it down first.

Another video today. This time, it's another installment of the Alberto Gonzales Spanish Soap Opera. Pretty funny. Interesting note: this video expires on 8/26/07. Good to know.



I promise I won't get in the habit of posting videos everyday instead of sharing my thoughts with you, but this week was just too busy. I realize that there are some people who only post other people's stuff and never their own. I am not one of those jerks.

Well, we're leaving on vacation this afternoon to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, but I'll be back on Monday. Have a great weekend!

I am quite busy with school, work, and my inventory for Celebrate Recovery, which has left me with little time for blogging. What's my solution? Post someone else's stuff!

This time, feel free to enjoy ABC's 20/20 on school choice. They make a very compelling argument for a voucher system which would allow parents to choose which school, public or private, they would like to enroll their student in using a voucher for their child issued by the government. I'm learning about this out of a chapter in the textbook, Critical Issues in Education: Dialogues and Dialectics by Jack Nelson.

The first video is the shorter (9:40) version of the 20/20 episode. The latter (40:45) it worth a watch, and doesn't include any commercials!





I hope to blog my opinions in more depth sometime later. What do you think about it?

A quick note

I've been busy working five days a week for the first time in a while, so I'm trying to get used to it. Sorry about the lack of blog posts. I'm afraid that as I get busier, the blog will be the first thing to suffer. I have a class starting on Monday that will take up my mornings, too. Feel free to encourage me to write, though! :-)

My only points of interest lately is that I recommend that you never go outside in Texas without bug spray. I now have something like thirty mosquito bites on my legs...so much so that I can barely sleep at night. Bad times. Secondly, Ron Paul has gotten my attention as one of the only presidential candidates who seems to have a worthwhile foreign policy, in my opinion. Check out the video.

Coincidence?

I found this video to be extremely hilarious. Apparently lightning temporarily cut off Rudy Giuliani when responding to a question about his stance on abortion in the most recent Republican presidential debates. He is one of the only Republicans you'll ever see who is pro-choice.

Also, I'm obsessed with weather. I woke up this morning to the sound of thunder and it was still dark outside at 7:00. I got up to open the blinds and saw the lightning and was quite excited. Of course, the first thing I did was log on to weather.com to look at the radar. I love watching the storm approaching and seeing its path. Or maybe I just love all the pretty colors. Anyway, I did all of this before taking my bath. Dawn noted that there are few things that will get me excited enough to do before I get clean in the morning. Lately it has been the weather and a finished Drum Corps DVD. I am a total dork, but at least my wife thinks I'm cool.

Thunderstorms

I love thunderstorms. I woke up this morning to darkness at 8:00am and found that we were about to be hit by this huge line of storms being blown out of the north. I'm not sure I've seen that much red on the Doppler radar before. I took a video of the clouds with my Palm. So, I'm blogging until the power goes out. I love the autosave feature they put on blogger. I can't lose much that way.

I really enjoy being inside during a thunderstorm and watching the clouds and lightning and hearing the thunder. I'm a big fan of clouds, too. I took several pictures from the plane on the approach to Dallas a couple of weeks ago. It is too exciting. I was a big fan of the movie Twister growing up. There is something about the idea of winds so powerful that they can pull large, heavy objects and throw them several yards or even carry them several miles. I'm in awe of that.

It has been raining almost every day for the last two weeks here. We are well out of our drought. For the month of May, we've gotten almost eight inches of rain, which is like five times as much rain as last year, apparanetly. It has been cloudy and dark for a while, and I've been home most all day during that. I can't say that I've saved much for a rainy day, much less 10 rainy days.

Hymn

I was just listening to Minnesota Public Radio and heard a piece by Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) who I later found out was a little-known American composer whose influences include Ralph Vaughan-Williams and eastern music as well. He was actually quite prolific - he wrote 67 symphonies and in all over 400 works. I'm sad that I haven't heard of him until now. This video depicts celestial bodies spinning to Hovhaness' String Quartet No. 2, Mvt. III: Hymn. This music gives me chills. If you like this, get a copy of Hovhaness' Symphony No. 2: "Mysterious Mountain." Now that piece is cool.
